Aimed to hurt somebody
Obscenity is mainly used for its shock value to create laughter or horror in an audience. If I were to turn on the TV and see somebody get their head smashed in with an anvil, I would be horrified and would consider it obscenity. If I saw a cartoon drop an anvil on another cartoons head, I would think it was normal and maybe even a little bit funny. The reason why we are not offended by those types of cartoons is we know that the artist used cartoons in order to let people know that it is not real, and that it would not be funny if it happened to a real person. Wiley Coyote cartoons are not aimed to offend someone because they use characters, like animals, that cannot be interpreted as representing a person, or group of people. Political cartoons are a different story, because they are aimed at a group of people. I have been offended by some political cartoons because I know they were meant to hurt somebody. In other words, if somebody says something in order to offend somebody, then it is obscenity.
